Did Alexander Campbell found the church of Christ?
Is it true that Alexander Campbell founded the church of Christ?
Absolutely not. The church of Christ was founded approximately 1755 years before Mr. Campbell was born. If he had founded the church of Christ, his followers would wear his name. Of some Corinthians, who were saying, "I am of Paul," the apostle asked, "Was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized into the name of Paul?" (1 Cor. 1:13). The obvious answer is "No!" Therefore members of the church of Christ do not look to Mr. Campbell as their founder because he died of natural causes, not crucifixion. Christians are baptized in the name of Christ (Acts 10:48), not of Alexander Campbell. For it to have been founded by Mr. Campbell, he would have to be the originator of its doctrines and practices. The Christian's faith does not descend from him but from the true founder, Jesus Christ (Matt. 16:18). Every item of faith and practice in the church of Christ was observed by godly men and women long, long before Mr. Campbell preached his first sermon. In fact, every member of the church of Christ before or since Mr. Campbell has found his faith in the words revealed by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16) as recorded in the New Testament. Many great minds have explored the scriptures and from their study have exhorted men and women to follow the pattern of teaching found in the New Testament. Good men appreciate the study of Mr. Campbell. However, no serious Bible student believes that any new truth originated with Alexander Campbell or any other man.
