There is a limited amount of information, which is a little ambiguous in nature, that shows the congregation at Town Creek may have exisited as a non-denominational group in the middle to late 1860's. From an old diary, found among the church records, it can be seen that the people of the congregation were searching for truth from God's Word with regard to proper worship.
In that same diary it can also be seen that T. B. Larimore and some of his students had made contact with the congregation by the late 1880's. Larimore’s initials are found beside the names of individuals he baptized, as well as the initials of some of his "boys" beside other names.
This is evidence that the members were being preached to, and taught by men from the Mars Hill School of Preaching in Florence, Alabama. The congregation may have called themselves the church of God at Town Creek before 1890, but by 1893 they were calling themselves a church of Christ.
