Outreach Church of Christ
On October 9, 2007, a group of about thirty-five like minded individuals, plus children, began meeting together in the Hamilton Texas Junior High School library to worship God. Though we were not officially trying to start a church and had no formal name, people generally referred to us as "The Library Church."After a few weeks of very positive, uplifting worship experiences, we decided to make it a permanent situation and formed an official church entity. We selected as our name "Outreach Church of Christ."After a year in the library, we an opportunity to move into a local building owned by a friend of one of our members. We began worshiping there in late summer of 2009.In September 2010, a church building in South Hamilton opened up for sale, which caught the attention of several of our members. As a congregation we took a look; but most felt it was too small and too expensive. Our priority was (and is) to have money to help those in need, and for other good causes in our community.
Though that building did not fit, it opened our eyes to another location which was available for purchase; the old "Central Christian Church" building at 302 N. Rice. This facility was originally built and used as a church building, beginning in 1902.In 1911, due to membership growth to well over one hundred members, the building was expanded to its present size.It remained in use as a Christian Church for most of a century, until 1997, when the membership stopped meeting.A trust was formed to liquidate the assets and one of the trustees, Mr. T.R. Locke, Jr., eventually bought the property to prevent it from being torn down.
In 2005, Mr. Locke upgraded the property by installing a new metal roof and two new air conditioning systems, and totally rewiring the building. He left the beautiful creaking wood floors and the century-old doors, stage, and pulpit intact. He leased out the facility for the next four years as a retail shopping center known as "The Shops in Hamilton."In 2010, The Shops closed down and the property was on the market once again.Because of his strong desire for this historic building to be used as a church building, Mr. Locke made a generous offer to Outreach Church of Christ and a deal was struck. We moved in and held our first service on 10/10/10, our third birthday.
