The sign out front (SOF) of a place of worship may carry any number of biblically supported terms which denote its supposed allegiances. However, if the body which worships at that location is not adhering to God’s will for the church then the words on the SOF are only a dead cognomen. It helps to remember what the term “NAME” represents with regard to God’s infinite will. It represents “authority.” Jesus is the authority (Matt. 28:18-20) and salvation cannot be obtained outside of that which He has authorized (Acts 4:12).

If a police officer yells, “Stop in the name of the law” most people understand what he is actually saying. He is telling someone to stop what they are doing because he represents an authority that upholds the rules and regulations all must live by. Yet, many people are confused regarding the Scriptures which speak about the “name of the Lord” or “in His name” etc. It really isn’t difficult to understand what the name of Jesus represents. The difficulty for many is doing what He has authorized.

Yes, contrary to general idea inferred by Juliet’s words in Shakespeare’s play*, there is something in a name. “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus sweetest name I know!”**
