1 Corinthians 1:10 - 13 (NKJV) Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
What are the reasons for the division of the Lord’s church here in Childersburg? It is easy to point fingers and say “It’s their fault” or “We love OUR preacher” or “They hurt my feelings” Yet any reason given that does not contain scriptural proof of error is not a valid reason. Notice the passage above, what was Paul condemning? The division within the church at Corinth. What was the source of the division? They were choosing the men to follow, rather than the one who was crucified for us and the one in whose name we have been baptized. If we look at the division in our city could we be found to be guilty of dividing over the love of men such as Elders or Preachers? If so, can we not see that what Paul wrote to the Corinthians would be applicable to Childersburg?
The Lord’s church is to be united in one accord. Imagine the worship services, the work and the message we would send to a lost city if we would allow God’s word to lead us! Allowing God’s word to light our path and being the only light we follow will show us where repentance is needed, what activities are scriptural, what it takes to please the one who died for all of us. The one who tells us in John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” How can we possibly say we are His disciples to the world when we are divided? Before anyone point to a denomination and say that they have many congregations in our city, let’s recall that we are not to be the world and in a city our size is there a need for three congregations a few miles from one another or one unified congregation?
