Be a Good Steward of Your Heart

Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.

Proverbs 4:23

 

We must become, above all, good stewards of our hearts. If we desire to receive the fullness of the blessings of God so that we can be of greater blessing to others, we must make a commitment to invest the time and energy necessary to expand our hearts. Expanding our hearts requires a serious commitment to our own spiritual growth and development. Taking time in this important area will keep us from squandering opportunities God provides.

You may say: "I want to do that, but how?" Being a good steward of your heart does not mean developing your talents and gifts, although that is a good thing to do. It is a matter of opening your innermost being ever more fully to receive God's equipping for what he has called you to be.

If the idea of increasing your inner capacity is new to you, I'd like to encourage you to give it some thought. Here's an illustration.

Imagine you had a 40-ounce pitcher of water and you wanted to pour it all into an eight-ounce glass. That wouldn't work, would it? You can go ahead and try it, but we all know what would happen, right? Most of the water would spill over the glass and go to waste.

To pour the full amount of the pitcher, you need to get a bigger glass. You need to increase the size of the receiving container. The same is true in the realm of the spirit. Through Jesus, God has made available to us wisdom, power and blessing. For us to receive such bounty, He needs us to have limitless capacity. He needs us to expand our hearts.

As wise stewards of our hearts, we must beware of slipping into a state of complacency regarding God's Word. We must be conscious that meditating on His Word day and night prepares us to prosper and increase. Ignoring this will bring about stagnancy in the things of God, limiting our hearts' capacity to receive. No one purposely seeks stagnancy. No one wants to be dissatisfied and miss out on the good things that God wants to flow through us.

Give expanding your heart the priority it deserves. Prepare yourself to receive the fullness of the blessings of God so that you can flow through greater blessing to others...the springs of life.
