Jesus described a scene that was familiar to those listening
to Him because many were shepherds in that time. A number of shepherds would lead their sheep
into a common sheepfold where the shepherds could protect and care for them. There would be but one door or entrance into
the sheepfold by which the sheep would enter and exit. One shepherd would stand in the entrance way
as the doorkeeper and he would let the shepherds in so they could take their
sheep to pasture. Jesus uses this
picture to demonstrate how He is the true Shepherd and the Scribes and
Pharisees were wicked shepherds. Wicked
shepherds would be recognized and not permitted to enter the sheepfold. Therefore, they would have to find some other
way into the sheepfold to steal and kill the sheep. All false shepherds are alike in that they
seek to use and take advantage of the sheep for their own selfish
interests. Paul said, "I urge you,
brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put
obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep
away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their
own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive
people. (Romans 16:17-18).
"So Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep....I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." Here is a very instructive picture of Christ. The very first questions that must be answered are, "How can I draw near to God seeing that I am a sinner? How can I be saved?" Jesus came to provide a way of escape for us by His death on the cross and becoming the Savior of mankind. Peter wrote, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. (I Peter 3:18). Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me" (John 14:6).
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." The life Jesus offers us is a life that overflows from all of the blessings God has for us (Ephesians 1:3). Paul wrote, "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
Jesus is the door and offers abundant life, but Satan comes
to kill steal and destroy
SAVIOR, LIKE A SHEPHERD LEAD US
Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us, be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.
Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse and power to free.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! We will early turn to Thee.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! We will early turn to Thee.
Early let us seek Thy favor, early let us do Thy will;
Blessèd Lord and only Savior, with Thy love our bosoms fill.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still.
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still.
