Foot Washing
6/28/2018

John 13:7-8 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you shall understand hereafter." Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."

Peter is so aghast at the position Jesus humbles Himself to that he misses the point the Lord is trying to make. Jesus filled the role of a servant and washed the feet of each disciple. A servant is not the position that Peter had given Jesus in his heart and mind, and rightly so. But we must remember Jesus did also come to serve. Something we need to keep in mind.

Jesus' answer to Peter's refusal to have Jesus wash his feet is a powerful statement on salvation. "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." Who does the work? The Creator of the Universe looks Peter straight in the eye, and every other human being symbolically, and says - there is not one iota of effort or wisdom than you can bring to being washed clean from sin.

Jesus tells Peter and everyone else in the room - I do the work or you have no hope of eternity in His Father's house.

John's writing shows us the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Lord and King.  From the cross Jesus will cry out, "It is finished!" No other person can make that declaration. The Lord tells His friends at the table - you're not going to fully understand this right now, but a little later you will.

This is so true of each one who comes to Christ for salvation. We cannot completely grasp the enormity of the relationship we had just entered into with God. As we walk with Him, pieces move into place not unlike a picture puzzle. As the pieces fill in, more and more of the picture becomes clearer. That process will never end through all eternity.

Grace & Peace,

Mike
