Ruby CottenRuby Mai Cotten, age 88 of Hendersonville, died on April 29, 2014.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Charles Layton Cotten; children, Danny Cotten of Nashville, Pam (David) Connell of Marietta, GA, Rickey Cotten of Nashville, Alan Cotten of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Michael Howell, Jr., Kristen (Nathan) Garroway, Shea Cotten, Chris (Hannah) Cotten, Amy (Alex) McKinlay, Adam (Emily) Connell, Brent (Angie) Cotten; and eight great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by three siblings (of the original seven): Mrs. Bobbie Dorris of Henderson, KY, Mr. Elmer (Annette) Lee of Smyrna, and Mr. Billy (Pat) Lee of Hendersonville.

Mrs. Cotten was born April 27, 1926 near Hamble in Dickson County, TN and was the eldest daughter of Robert W. and Christine Lee. She was a 1945 graduate of Charlotte High School in Charlotte, TN. Following her marriage on July 4, 1947, she and Charles lived in Germany for four years while he worked in military intelligence, and Ruby did secretarial work for the Army.
Upon returning to the States, they moved to Nashville and made their home in the Inglewood neighborhood for more than thirty years before moving to Hendersonville. Over the course of her life, Mrs. Cotten was a devoted homemaker -- raising four children and one grandson -- as well as a great support to her husband in the operation of the Charles L. Cotten Roofing Company, in business for more than fifty years.

She was deeply loyal to her family and to the work of the Church. She delighted in writing cards and notes of encouragement to others, memorizing the Scriptures, and daily Bible reading. Ruby was thrilled when her twin great-granddaughters, Ruby and Lila, were born six years ago. At the time of her death, Mrs. Cotten was a member of the Creekview Church of Christ in Gallatin. For many years, she served in teaching the Bible to children, supported the work of missionaries in the Philippines, and served alongside her husband in his work as an elder.

The family will visit with friends on Friday, May 2, 2014, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., at Spring Hill Funeral Home.  Additional visitation will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, from 12pm until 12:45pm. Stacey Durham will lead the funeral service to honor Mrs. Cotten on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in historic Spring Hill Cemetery.
Flowers can be sent to Spring Hill Funeral Home. Arrangements entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home, 5110 Gallatin Road, Nashville, TN 37216, (615)861-8509.
