In What Body Did Jesus Ascend to Heaven?

Jon Gary Williams

Jesus was resurrected in His physical body and was witnessed by many people (I Corinthians 15:5-7). However, the body in which Jesus ascended to heaven was not physical, for flesh and blood cannot enter heaven (I Corinthians 15:50). So, what happened to Jesus' resurrected body?

When Jesus ascended into the clouds His body experienced a transfiguration. This must have certainly been the case and was similar to the transfiguration of Jesus' body recorded in Matthew 7:2. Here, His body, as well as His raiment, were transfigured in a way that it gave Him a glorified, divine appearance -- his face shining as the sun, his raiment white as light. Jesus' appearance was so significantly different, He told Peter, James and John not to tell anyone about it until He had risen from the dead (V. 9).

At the last day bodies of all the dead will be raised (John 5:28,29). However, these will not be the same bodies that went into the grave, rather, bodies transfigured into the likeness of Christ's transformation (Philippians 3:21; I John 3:2).

And this explains the vastly different description given to the resurrected bodies: glorious, spiritual, image of the heavenly, incorruptible, immortal (I Corinthians 15:43 ff.) Here, these are not merely bodies raised from the dead, but rather a complete, total transformation into immortal bodies, like that of Jesus, that are ready for the habitation of immortal souls.
