A Description of the Devil
Dan Bailey
There are several New Testament scriptures that gives us names and descriptions of the Devil. Consider the following verses:
Matthew 4:3 -- "And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."
Matthew 4:10 -- "Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
Matthew 9:34 -- "But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils."
Matthew 12:24 -- "But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils."
Matthew 13:19 -- "When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side."
Matthew 13:38 -- "The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;"
Matthew 13:39 -- "The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels."
John 8:44 -- "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
John 12:31 -- "Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out."
John 14:30 -- "Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me."
2 Corinthians 4:4 -- "In whom the god of this worldhath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
2 Corinthians 6:15 -- "1And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?"
2 Corinthians 11:3 -- "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."
2 Corinthians 11:14 -- "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."
Ephesians 2:2 -- "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience."
1 Peter 5:8 --"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."
1 John 2:14 -- "I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one."
Revelation 9:11 -- "And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon."
Revelation 12:7 -- "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,"
Revelation 12:9 -- "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
Revelation 12:10 -- "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night."
Thinking about these names and descriptions of the devil should help us to remember who we are fighting against. "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:11-12).
