Works Of The Flesh: Adultery
by Dan C. Bailey
At one time in our country, adultery was rarely found. Oh yes, there have been adulterers and adulteresses since the beginning of time, but our laws did not condone nor authorize adultery. Today, divorces are granted for any cause or without even declaring fault. How sad that we have wandered so far from God and from the teachings of His Word!
Adultery is defined as "unlawful intercourse with another's wife" (Thayer, p. 417). Obviously, adultery can be committed by the husband or the wife. The marriage relationship is to be pure and kept inviolate in the sight of God. Paul said, "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4).
Marriage was ordained by God in the pristine garden of Eden. Moses stated God's position and recognition of marriage in Genesis 2:24: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."
The Pharisees asked, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?" (Matthew 19:3). Jesus responded, "...Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder" (Matthew 19:4-6). The Pharisees further questioned Jesus, "Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?" (Matthew 19:7). Jesus then replied, "...Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery" (Matthew 19:8-9). From this passage it is clear that marriage involves:
1) a qualified male and female,
2) that the man is to leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife, 3) that the two would be joined together in God's sight.
Those who break their wedding vows by committing adultery will be lost. May God help us to have good strong marriages and good strong families in His sight. No nation can long prosper that is full of adulterers and adulteresses.
