A Lover of Wisdom

A Lover of Wisdom

By Dan C. Bailey

Most modem day philosophers do not believe In God. As a matter of fact, most "professional philosophers" in history have rejected God and His revelation to mankind. This seems very strange to me because a philosopher is supposed to be a "lover of wisdom." If one truly loves wisdom, he will believe in God and have a desire to know everything about Him. God is the source of true wisdom. "For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" (Proverbs 2:6). Since God is all wise, lowly man must go to Him in order to know how to live and how to prepare for eternity. Without God and the revelation of His word, we would be lost, helpless, and void of true wisdom. This is the position of the infidel, the atheist, the non- believer.

There are several things that must take place if one is to find or obtain wisdom.

First: No one becomes wise who does not seek wisdom anymore than a person can obtain knowledge without a desire and effort to do so. "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God" (Proverbs 2:1-5).

Second: In order to find wisdom one must be honest. Think about it, surely one must make choices if one is to obtain wisdom. But if one is dishonest, what would be the motivation to select true wisdom? It is a fact that all people are not honest.

Third: In order to find wisdom one must reason with his or her mind. Surely wisdom cannot be found without some knowledge and some understanding. In order to do this, One must be willing to think or to reason.

Fourth: It is the case that one must desire wisdom, be honest about choosing wisdom and one must be willing to reason. Finally, one must be willing to carefully examine the evidence and to choose that which is wise.

Today, is the day to be wise. Since God is the source of wisdom, come to be Him as He directs. We can only go to the Father through His beloved Son. Jesus said, "...I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6)- The way to heaven is very narrow. "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:13-14).

So, choose wisely before it is too late. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation" (Hebrews 9:27-28). "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen" (Revelation 1:7). "And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power" (Il Thessalonians 1:7-9).
