The Bible, Our Guide
Dan C. Bailey
The Bible has been given to us be God to guide our feet in His ways. We read in Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Without the Bible we would be in darkness as to how we should worship God, serve God, and obey God. But with the Bible we can know what God would have us to do.
As Christians, we should prepare ourselves to "give an answer" or defense of the truth of God's Word. "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" (1 Peter 3:15).
The Bible will guide us in our worship to God. "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). We are taught to observe the Lord's supper on the first day of the week. "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight" (Acts 20:7). We are expected to give as we have been prospered on each first day of the week. We read in 1 Corinthians 16:2, "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."
The Bible guides us to teach the lost and show them the way to salvation. The great commission is recorded in Matthew 28:18-2, "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." We can teach others about salvation be referring them to Mark 16:15-16, "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."
The Bible is an infallible compass to guide us through rough seas to our heavenly shore. May God help us to study it and to follow it. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15). As we study we will continue to increase our knowledge of God's word and know, what God would have us to do to be pleasing in His sight. "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen" (2 Peter 3:18).
