I.        INTRODUCTION

A.      For the third straight year (2009-2001), President Barrack Obama has proclaimed the month of June as "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month” in the United States.

B.      As our nation takes pride in this shameful behavior, let us take the opportunity to consider the truth about homosexuality according to the Scriptures.

II.      GOD’S HONEST TRUTH ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY

A.      Homosexuality is an abomination against God.

                                                             1.      God’s disdain for homosexuality is evident in the volume of Scriptural evidence against it.

a.       Leviticus 18:22 and 1Kings 14:24 describe such behavior as an abomination.

b.       Romans 1:24-27 describes it as "impurity,” "degrading passion,” and "indecent.”

c.        1Timothy 1:8-11 categorizes homosexuality with lawlessness, rebellion, ungodliness, sin, unholiness, profanity, immorality, and "whatever else is contrary to sound teaching.”

                                                             2.      Historically, God has punished homosexual behavior in the most extreme manner.

a.       During Abraham’s time, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were utterly destroyed with fire from God because of this and other wicked practices (Gen. 13:13; 18:20; 19:1-29).

i.         Throughout Scripture, Sodom and Gomorrah are remembered as the standards of  wickedness and destruction (Deut. 29:23; Isa. 1:9; 3:9; 13:19; Jer. 23:14; 49:18; 50:40; Lam. 4:6; Ezek. 16:46-49; 16:53-56; Amos 4:11; Zeph. 2:9; Matt. 10:15; 11:23-24; Rom. 9:29; 2Pet. 2:6; Jude 7; Rev. 11:8).

ii.        Sodom is so synonymous with this wickedness that the crime of homosexuality has been named sodomy.

b.       Under the Law of Moses, homosexuality was punishable by death (Lev. 20:13).

c.        Under the Law of Christ, unrepentant homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Cor. 6:9-11).

B.      Homosexuality is an unnatural perversion.

                                                             1.      Notice the explanation given in Romans 1:26-27.

a.       God gave the Gentiles over to "degrading passions.”

i.         Because the Gentiles rebelled against God (Rom. 1:18-25), He gave them over to the self-destructive path they desired.  Homosexuality was part of that path.

ii.        Homosexuality is described as a "degrading passion” because it lowers the dignity of a human (Jude 7 calls it "gross immorality”).

iii.      Homosexuality in our nation is the result of the so-called "sexual revolution” that first embraced fornication and adultery and has continually degraded the culture.  What is next?  Polygamy?  Incest?  Pedophilia?  Bestiality?

b.       When the Gentiles engaged in homosexuality, they did that which is "against nature.”

i.         The word at the end of Romans 1:26 literally means "against nature.”  Homosexuals defy the natural purpose of God and commit "indecent acts.”

ii.        In the past, one of the legal descriptions of homosexuality was "crimes against nature.”  Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780), who wrote a commentary on the Common Law of England, called homosexuality "an offense of so dark a nature, the very mention of which is a disgrace to human nature, a crime not fit to be named.”

                                                             2.      Despite propaganda to the contrary, no scientific or biological excuse has been found for homosexuality.  God does not make people as homosexuals, but rather they choose to be so.

a.       There is no so-called "gay gene.”

i.         On April 14, 2003, the International Human Genome Consortium completed the Human Genome Project in which they mapped the entire human genetic code.  No homosexual gene was found.  No one is "born that way.”

ii.        This has received no attention in the press, but it is a notable scientific fact.

b.       Like all sinners, homosexuals choose to sin.  Nothing in their nature forces them to commit sin, and they are capable of ceasing from sin at any time (many have!).

III.   WHY ARE SOME PROUD OF HOMOSEXUALITY?

A.      For all the efforts made to elevate the status of homosexuals in this nation, one would think that they comprised a significant portion of the American population.  This is not the case.

                                                             1.      In fact, homosexuals represent a very small percentage of the population.

a.       According to a legal brief filed with the Supreme Court in the Lawrence vs. Texas case (March 26, 2003), the National Health and Social Life Survey "found that 2.8% of the male, and 1.4% of the female population identify themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual” (via reports from 31 homosexual and pro-homosexual groups).

b.       According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, homosexual households represent only 0.56% of the population (601,209 out of 106,741,426 households).

                                                             2.      These numbers give proof that homosexuals are statistically insignificant in the United States.

B.      Nevertheless, the promotion of homosexuality as a normal, moral, "alternative lifestyle” has accelerated with great fervor in this country.  Even many who are not homosexual are proud of those who are.

                                                             1.      From a legal standpoint, homosexuality is constantly gaining legitimacy.

a.       As recently as 1960, all fifty states had laws prohibiting the practice of homosexuality.  Today all of those laws have been overturned, and the final verdict was rendered by the U.S. Supreme Court on November 13, 2003 (Lawrence v. Texas).

b.       Now the pendulum has swung completely to the other side with the legalization of homosexual "marriage” in California, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia.  New York is also very close.

                                                             2.      In politics, homosexual marriage is an election issue that divides America.

a.       Some politicians advocate a constitutional amendment to protect marriage, but others favor individual state laws to permit homosexuals to "marry.”

b.       Of course, all of this overlooks the fact that God defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman long ago (Gen. 2:21-24; Matt. 19:4-6).

                                                             3.      In education, the homosexual agenda has infiltrated schools as far as the elementary level.

a.       Efforts are made in many schools to portray homosexuals in a positive light, and homosexuality is taught even to kindergarteners.  Books such as Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy’s Roommate are aimed at small children and have become part of some state school curriculums.

b.       The National Education Association continually promotes "sexual orientation” (code for homosexuality) issues in public schools.

                                                             4.      On the entertainment front, homosexuals are depicted on television shows, in movies, and in books in a positive way and at a rate much greater than they exist in the general population.

C.      All of this provokes this question: If homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God and homosexuals represent such a tiny minority of people, then why is our nation so proud of such wicked people?

                                                             1.      The reason is simple – rebellion against God.  The homosexual agenda is just one part of a greater agenda to promote all types of wickedness and evil in this nation and around the world.

                                                             2.      Romans 1:18-32 describes a series of steps that occurred when the Gentiles rebelled against God, and that series of steps has become a pattern that is now repeating in our own nation and time.  Give particular attention to verse 32, which states, "And although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”

                                                             3.      Those who rebel against God find such perverse joy in their own rebellion and sinful indulgence that they also rejoice at the rebellion of others.  The more perverse the activity, the more they revel in it.  One does not have to be a homosexual to promote it and share in its condemnation.

IV.    CONCLUSION

A.      Let us make no mistake about it – homosexuality is an abomination against God and a crime against nature (Lev. 18:22; 1Cor. 6:9-11; 1Tim. 1:8-11).

                                                             1.      We must not be distracted from this truth by emotional and false arguments about civil rights.  Homosexuals are not deprived of any civil rights in this country.

                                                             2.      Do not be deceived into giving consent for this wicked practice.  "Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves” (Rom. 14:22).

B.      God’s people must stand against the wicked homosexual agenda lest we should be swept away with it.  Do not forget Sodom and Gomorrah – Gen. 19:1-29.  It is nothing to be proud of.
