Proverbs 14:34 (NASB) -- Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to anypeople.
When a President is elected, about half of the population is excited that their person got in and about half think the end of life as we know it is near. When someone from the other party takes office, the roles reverse. Voting is important and Americans should take very seriously the privilege of choosing leaders.
A wise saying from the bible, though, tells us how a nation is blessed when it follows the Lord. God blessed the nation of Israel when they obeyed and took away the blessings when they turned away. The Book of Daniel explains that God puts into these leadership positions whomever He wishes, sometimes even the most evil of people. cf. Daniel 4:25
The United States has been, since its inception, a predominately Christian nation. The Founding Fathers wrote into law that no particular religion was to be adopted and promoted over another by the secular government, but for the most part the citizens have been believers in Christ. And God has blessed us.
We, as other nations, have always been under threat of assault. Every sovereign nation must remain vigilant to protect its borders and its citizens. A strong military is important. Who get elected into government offices is important. Education and weaponry and diplomacy are all important. But it is God who exalts a nation when that nation seeks righteousness!
Do you want this nation to remain strong? Teach your children about Christ. Do you want your grandchildren to live in the free nation in which you were reared? Take them to church. Do you not have children but you fear for all those you know in this wonderful nation? Seek, model and teach righteousness.
