J. Roy Vaughan vs J. D. Holder (Baptist)
April 6, 1933
Tupelo, Mississippi
(By J. D. Cox)
In the courthouse at Tupelo, Miss., Mar. 7-10.
Same propositions used in the Cayce - Srygley debate. Large audiences from towns in Miss. and Ala. A number of gospel preachers were there. Mr. Holder relied almost exclusively upon Cayce's arguments. He expected bro. Vaughan to follow Srygley's line of argument, and was not prepared to meet any other. Bro. Vaughan handicapped his opponent by refusing to discuss repentance and baptism until the last night. Bro. Vaughan used his first night presenting scriptures which teach:
1) It is God's desire that all men may be saved;
2) God is no respecter of persons;
3) Whosoever obeys will be saved;
4) Faith is one condition upon which salvation is suspended.
The last night was spent in affirming that repentance and baptism are conditions of salvation.
Bro. Vaughan is a capable of defeating error by boldly presenting the truth. He has a logical mind, is a forceful speaker, and is princely in his conduct. The brethren are highly pleased.
