W. H. Trice vs D. S. Duck (Second-Day Adventist)
May 4, 1911
Scotts Hill, Tennessee
(By Unknown)
Bro. Trice affirmed: The Bible teaches that the spirit of man is conscious between death and the resurrection. 1) God is immortal, man is the offspring of God (Acts 17:18; Heb. 12:9). Like begets like, therefore, man is immortal. That which is immortal is conscious, therefore, man is always conscious. 2) Matt. 22:23. God is the God of the living. God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Therefore, these three are now living (conscious). 3) Luke 16. Abraham, Lazarus and the rich man were all dead; yet all were conscious. Therefore, the spirit of man is conscious between death and the resurrection. 4) Rev. 6:9-10. People had been slain; souls were conscious and crying. Therefore, the spirit of man is conscious from death to the resurrection.
Here is an example of Ducks evasion of the issue: Trice: Is man wholly mortal? Duck: Not sir. Trice: What part of man is immortal? Duck: No any part. Trice: What part of man never dies? Duck: The part that never lives. Trice: What part of man never lives? Duck: The life never lives apart from the body. In Duck's first speech he came dangerously near saying that Christ was wholly material, yet when pressed he would not avow it. It seems that he wanted to make his exact position vague and ambiguous with reference to materialism.
Duck affirmed: The Bible teaches that man is wholly unconscious between death and the resurrection. He said the idea of the idea of the soul being immortal came from the ancient Egyptians and not the Bible. The wicked did not have eternal life and could not be conscious. Bro. Trice showed that eternal conscious existence does not mean eternal life. Bro. Trice affirmed: The Bible teaches that the wicked will suffer eternal torments. 1) The wicked go where the devil is (Matt. 25:41), the devil is tormented forever and forever (Rev. 20:10). Therefore, the Wicked will be tormented forever. 2) Matt. 25:46. The same word forever "ioneon," is used to name the length of the punishment of the wicked and the life of the righteous. 3) God lives forever (Rev. 10:6), the wicked are punished the same length of time (Rev. 20:10). Mr. Duck made as good a defense as any other Adventist. Bro. Trice's strength is in sledge hammer logic and straight to the point. He makes his points plain and strong and defends them.
