J. D. Tant vs Mr. Wyatt (Mormon)
March 5, 1908
College Grove, Tennessee
(By A. O. Calley)
A debate was held recently with the Church of Latter Day Saints, at Bethany church, about 4 miles N.E. of Cottage Grove, Tenn.
This debate had been talked of for a long time, especially by the "Saints." It was first arranged for bro. Joe Warlick to meet them; but just a few days before they were to meet Mr. Wyatt wrote to bro. Warlick telling him that he would not meet him in debate. He said, "You can go onto Tenn. and blow your horn and holler 'back out' if you desire; I'll not be there." When bro. Warlick received this, he did not think it necessary to go, as there was a case of smallpox in his family anyway. After all this Mr. Wyatt did come and was blowing much. When bro. J.D. Tant appeared, having come to hear bro. Warlick and Wyatt, he was asked to do the debating. This he gladly did. (Apparently, Waytt felt Tant would be easy to debate.)
Each affirmed on the church question. Bro. Tant so clearly presented the truth on his proposition that Wyatt argued but little against him. When the Mormon church came under his criticism, it was a real enjoyable time for Christians. Bro. Tant had no books with him, but, like David of old, slew the great giant with a few well chosen stones from God's book. He showed their origin, doctrine and practice to be out of harmony with the truth. The speakers were nice to each other. I believe good will result from the debate.
