C. M. Stubblefield vs H. H. Wallace (Primitive Baptist)
September 16, 1915
Metropolis, Illinois
(By F. L. Paisley)
Debate held on June 15-18 at Metropolis, Ill.
Bro. Stubblefield affirmed: Possibility of apostasy for two days. Argument was made from Gen. 17 that God made an "everlasting covenant" that Abraham and his seed should inherit Canaan forever; but things changed to the effect that the covenant was broken and the Jews were not in their promised possession. Mr. Wallace affirmed: Salvation before baptism. He made a strong fight but bro. Stubblefield was master of the situation.
Wallace violated the rules of debating. For example, in his first affirmative speech he introduced a negative argument on Mark 16:16. He spent much time trying to show the opposite of his proposition to be untrue, rather than showing his own proposition is true. To do this, he advanced his charts on "Campbellism," but was made to feel his defeat on such an attempt, so that he, finally, in referring to them, asked the audience not to notice the heading.
Some Primitive Baptists came to the sessions and said bro. Stubblefield did as fine a piece of work as they had ever seen. One brother said he had never heard a better debate or one freer form anger in the pulpit or audience. It closed with a heavy hand shake among all. The Baptists took up a donation to pay their part of the tent expense.
