F. B. Srygley vs W. M. Hicks (Baptist)
April 12, 1900
Location Unknown

(By R. E. McCorkle)

A six day debate (If it be lawful to call it a debate) from Mar. 1-6.

I (R. E. McCorkle) undertook to keep the debate down, and pleaded with the leading Baptists to put a clean man in Hick's place, who was about as mean a man as I ever saw. They said they cared not about his character, just so he made his points. I contended with the brethren to the last that it was b est to positively decline to have anything to do with Hicks, but I was overruled by the brethren. So discussion opened and we made the very best of it (for the truth) under the circumstances. I can safely say that Hicks is the most insulting and abusive man I ever met.

We felt very proud of the Christian dignity of bro. Srygley. When Hicks called him many things too bad to appear in print, bro. Srygley never showed the slightest color. Under the circumstances, bro. Srygley made a noble stand for truth and right, and I think some good will come of it. I warn the brethren everywhere against Hicks, as a man that no one can afford to spend time with. He is published unfavorably in several Baptist papers.
