L. B. Sewall vs A. J. Haysmer (Adventist)
October 18, 1906
Taft, Tennessee
(By J. R. Bradley)
At Taft, Tenn, Sept. 11-14.
The Sabbath question was discussed. I am sure that bro. Sewall's arguments were strictly scriptural. His arguments were to show what the "old covenant" contained, with whom made, and when abolished; and that the ten commandments being the very heart of the old covenant, and the only covenant containing the Sabbath, that, of course, the Sabbath was done away, too. To put it in the language of one who was a close observer: "Sewall made the Bible arguments and Haysmer made the thunder. Mr. Haysmer broke the rules of honorable controversy twice. One time he insinuated that bro. Sewall was an agent of the devil.
Following the debate bro. Sewall preached for a week. Large crowds heard some fine sermons.
