S. O. Pool vs J. W. Williams (Mormon)
April 21, 1910
Riverside, California

(By L. O. Perkins)

Six day debate at Riverside, Calif.

Williams affirmed for 3 nights and made a hard fight for his side of the question. He tried to prove the perpetuity of the apostles, miracles and revelation. To prove his first point he used Mark 16:15-20; Eph. 4:11; Jas. 5:14,15. Bro. Pool met him on Mk. 16:15-20, showing that the promise ("these signs shall follow them"), was made to the apostles, and that the scriptures show that these signs did, indeed, accompany the them. But this gave not proof that apostles exist today, especially the type that Mormons claim.

Bro. Pool showed that many of the prophecies of Joseph Smith were false and had never come to pass. Bro. Pool, in his 3 day affirmative, proved we are scriptural in name, faith, organization and practice. Mr. Williams could not overturn his arguments.

Interesting and amusing things happened. Mr. Williams claimed that our translation was not good and did not have all the Bible, and cited I Cor. 5:9 and Col. 4:16. Bro. Pool met this by asking Mr. Williams is there was not enough in the Bible to save if believed and obeyed. Mr. Williams answered "Yes." Bro. Pool then made the argument that if the Bible, believed and obeyed, would save, then we did not need the B ook of Mormon and the teachings of Joseph Smith.

Both men behaved themselves well. Mr. Williams is a shrewd debater and a forceful speaker. He will admit one things one night and the next night deny it emphatically. While the audience was convinced that bro. Pool was right and defeated Mr. Williams in the debate.

At the close of the debate we challenged Mr. Williams for a 12 day debate at San Bernardino where they have a church. Either bro. Pool or bro. W. Perkins will meet him there probably in April, the Lord willing.
