T. W. Phillips vs Mr. McWhirter (Christian Church)
January 23, 1908
Reesel, Texas
(By T. W. Phillips)
Held at Reesel, Tx, Jan. 7-10.
McWhirter affirmed that the use of instrumental music is scriptural. . McWhirter's first speech was a phenological lecture. He claimed that man in his primeval state was richly blessed with instrumental music talent, which God gave him to praise him with; therefore it was God who ordained that man should praise him in all worship with instrumental music. Aside from that argument, he contended that when the scriptures say "sing psalms," the musical instrument was included. He harped much on the Greek word "psallo." I showed him the instrument was "the heart." McWhirter admitted that instrumental music was never used in "old sanctuary" but said they did not sing in it either. I showed that smoke and odor went up from the golden altar in the sanctuary, and that we today praise God in the "new sanctuary" where we can send up prayers and songs.
McWhirter admitted that Jesus and the inspired apostles never did use musical instruments in any church or worship, but said they were afraid to do so on account of persecution. Aside from the above, the usual arguments were freely used. McWhirter became angry several times and resorted to many dirty sayings. He called me a "horse's tail" and a "fool" but only hurt himself and his cause in Reesel. He challenged me for a second debate there but the leading "Progressive" elder, who moderated for him, said he did not want the debate. I am ready to meet any "digressive" preacher anywhere on the organ question. Just now and then one will try to defend his doctrine.
One good bother and a widowed sister, whose faith had been shaken by the innovations, were reestablished in the faith, and the loyal brethren were encouraged and strengthened to contend more earnestly "for the faith which was once delivered to the saints."
