H. M. Phillips vs A. L. Spencer (Missionary Baptist)
February 11, 1915
Rogers Springs, Tennessee
(By Hal P. McDonald)
Nov. 3-6 at Rogers Springs, Tenn.
Bro. H.M. Philips, student at Henderson, Tenn., met A. L. Spencer (M.B.) in debate. Usual propositions: purpose of baptism, apostasy. Two session held each day.
The weather was fine and great crowds came. The conduct was an honor to all who came to learn. All enjoyed the noon hour by assembling around one great, long table laden with well-prepared food. Six Baptist preachers were there and several preachers of the church of Christ.
Bro. Phillips met every argument of Spencer easily and completely. Mr. Spencer is a sincere gentleman - and admitted he misunderstood our people. After the debate Mr. Wilbanks, Baptist preacher, expressed disappointment with the word of Mr. Spencer and challenged bro. Phillips to meet another man at another place. His challenge was accepted on the condition that the Baptist was a clean man and to have the debate at Middleton, Tenn., the home of Mr. Wilbanks. The Baptist have not answered yet.
