C. R. Nichol vs T. H. A. Laslie (General Baptist)
April 23, 1908
Dexter, Missouri
(By G. A. Dunn)
This debate held March 18-22 at General Baptist meeting house 8 miles S.W. of Dexter. Mo.
The disputants were C.R. Nichol of Clifron, Tx. and T. H. A. Laslie of Indiana. The general questions were affirmed by each.
Mr. Laslie is reputed to be a scholar, he claims to have taught 7 languages. He is the recognized leader of the Gen. Baptists. This is his tenth debate. While he is a man of some information, he is not a debater and never will be. He is about as fair as the average sectarian debater. The Gen. Bap. hold more truth than any other Baptists known to me. Beside the action of baptism, they claim no creed but the Bible, and teach the possibility of apostasy, open communion, free agency, infant purity and other minor points. Some believe in foot washing but Mr. Laslie did not defend that.
After the last night of the debate I preached at a school house about one mile from the place of the debate, we having no meeting house in the community. The Baptist announced preaching in their house that night also. We had a full house and one baptism. They had only 3 persons at their service, which shows the result of the debate.
