Debate at Brooklyn Heights church of Christ in Forth Worth, Tex. June, 1937.
Mr. Albin affirmed: "That in order for a man to be saved he must be baptized with the Holy Spirit." Bro. Lyles affirmed: "That there are three persons in the Godhead - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit." Two nights for each subject.
While bro. Lyles had been with me in a number of debates, I had never heard him in one before, He did a good piece of work, exposed error, and defended the truth of the Bible.
Mr. Albin was focused to defend three baptisms, as he claimed remission of sins is reached at water baptism, which cleans him up, or prepares him, for Holy Spirit baptism, and than he is kept clean by the baptism of fire. This put him in an unfavorable position, for he had to say that a man might have every sin forgiven and yet go to hell because he had not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He was asked , "If baptism in water brings remission of all sins and baptism of fire keeps him clean from all future sins, then what does baptism of the H.S. save him from?"
Bro. Lyles' opening affirmative on the second proposition was unanswerable, and Mr. Albin mentioned two scriptures in his opening negative. That the Godhead is composed of three persons, but one in purpose, work, and nature, was abundantly proven by bro. Lyles, Mr. Albin would accept no translation but the K. J. Version; yet, when he came to I John 5:7, he threw aside the text as spurious. He was shown that the text was the only version he and his people would accept, and the ones in which he is left out are translations he would not accept.
The debate was conducted in a clean way, and much good will result from it.
