F. O. Howell vs J. R. Clark (Missionary Baptist)
February 5, 1914
Near Holladay, Tennessee
(By W. L. Neal)
This debate held at Green Hill Baptist Church, 6 miles east of Holladay, Tenn., Jan. 6-9.
J. R. Clark began his first speech with mudslinging. He compared Campbellites to polecats, tad poles, frogs, mosquitoes. Little alecs, goats and every hateful thing. For 2 1⁄2 hours Howell begged Clark to stay out of the mud and discuss the issues like a man. At the same time he turned all of the trash thrown by Clark and it had a telling effect on Clark.
Clark affirmed: The H. S. operates directly on the heart of the sinner. This was overwhelmingly defeated by Howell. He pressed Clark all through the debate for one passage in the Bible that teaches "without means." He offered $100 for it and he would quit the debate. Howell's speeches on baptism relegated Clark to the land of silence. It appeared that all he lacked was closing his eyes.
