Charles A. Holt vs Connie Lynch (Oneness-Holiness)
October 16, 1952
Idabel, Oklahoma

(By Charles A. Holt)

Mr. Lynch has had several debates and has lots of confidence in himself, often boastful and cocky. He has learned what to ignore and to take advantage of every little thing possible. Good debates are far more than might appear on the surface, The results of a debate are not immediate and may be unseen. The seed of truth may be planted that years later will bring forth fruit. The honest and sincere need time to think it over and study. It will do good.

Lynch and all the Oneness crowd believe that in order for water baptism to be valid, the preacher must "call over" the candidate the name of Jesus and only that name. Hence, they make the validity of baptism depend on what the preacher says as well as on what the candidate does. They believe in a baptismal formula, which amounts to some kind of charm. Lynch was called upon to give the passage that tells us what the preacher is to say when baptizing someone. He never produced it.

The Oneness-Holiness is rapidly growing. One reason is that they are militant - they stand and fight for their cause. This is commendable in anyone. When we stop fighting, we stop growing. The Oneness-Holiness people gladly debate. If you doubt it, just ask them. And be sure you know your lesson.
