J. D. Harding vs Sheffer (Methodist)
June 7, 1906
Center, Kentucky
(By Don C. Janes)
At Center, Ky., May 14-19.
Two propositions: Harding affirmed for 4 days: "Immersion in water is essential to pardon of sins." His testimony came from the Bible, the lexicons, Wesley and Watson.
Mr. Sheffer, who had debated us twice, did his best; but the best a sectarian preacher can do is not enough to upset the truth. He was 44 years old, has a good education and speaks well. He affirmed: that "persons may be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
Bro. Harding told him that he had a student who could make a better speech for present-day baptism, with his eyes blindfolded and hands tied behind his back.
The only books the Methodist brought into the debate were the Moody-Harding Debate, a book by Carson (a Baptist) and Campbell-Rice Debate. I recall that bro. Harding used the Methodist Discipline and Adam Clarke. Bro. Harding was deeply earnest and said some fine things. The large crowds heard fine things from him.
