W. Clarence Cooke vs W. W. Crouch (Missionary Baptist)
July 7, 1932
Fosterville, Tennessee

(By A. S. Landiss)

Fosterville, Tennessee, June 13-17 - held in high school building; splendid crowds attended. All could not be seated.

Subjects: Baptist, Holy Spirit, and Apostasy.

The fourth proposition was unusual. Mr. Crouch affirmed that Jesus established a Baptist Church during his personal ministry before Pentecost of Acts 2. Bro. Cooke could not get him to say which one it was, the foot washing or some other. Mr. Crouch disagrees with Baptists on many things. He said the church and the kingdom were the same as long as there was only one church. On the baptism question he said he baptized folks into Christ. I think he comes too near the truth on many things for the Baptists to keep putting him forward. He said God was is a Baptist and the Bible is a Baptist book. Bro. Cooke could never get him to explain the process by which God became a Baptist. Bro. Cooke was master of the situation from the start. He was a quick thinker and capable. He is hard on doctrine, but has a spirit of courtesy and consideration for his opponent. He does his part to hold debate on a high plane.

Mr. Crouch was a gentleman in deportment. Not every Baptist debater is as courteous as Mr. Crouch. The behavior of audience was wonderful. The night sessions were two hours and a half long. This was a dignified debate throughout. No ill will among neighbors. Truth has nothing to fear from investigation. Eight preachers of Church of Christ present. Landiss moderated for Cooke; Mr. Billingsley moderated for Crouch. If you need someone to defend the truth, call Bro. Cooke. One young man baptized by Bro. Cooke before debate ended.
