T. B. Clark vs C. B. Massey (Baptist)
June 22, 1916
Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee
(By Thomas H. Burton)
On Monday afternoon, June 5, Bro. T. B. Clark of Knoxville, Tennessee and Elder C. B. Massey (Baptist) of Pleasant Shade, Tennessee entered a five-day debate at Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. On first two days, Massey affirmed that the scriptures teach that repenting sinners must pray for and expect remission of sins in answer to prayers, through faith, before water baptism. He produced almost every scripture pertaining to erring children of God, but failed to produce one showing that alien sinners must pray for remission of sins. Bro. Clark met him fairly and squarely and showed truth seekers that God had never commanded alien sinners to pray for remission of sins but had always laid down a positive plan for them to come to him through obedience.
On the third day Clark showed that since the death on the cross all who are saved are saved the same way, by the same law. Massey made a great play on conversion but had no scripture to uphold him. On fourth day Massey tried to uphold apostasy. Clark showed that his scriptures had a progressive verb and meant a continuation. This did not try to answer. On fifth day Clark affirmed the possibility of apostasy. He showed clearly that a child of God may so act as to forfeit his right to heaven, and showed what a dangerous doctrine it is to preach anything else. This doctrine was first taught in the garden of Eden by the devil and has been taught every since by his agents.
The house would not hold the people. The best spirit prevailed. There was no wrangling to mar the pleasure. Clark presented the truth as the Bible teaches and gave satisfaction to all our brethren. Massey gave satisfaction to his Baptist brethren. Judson Sloan moderated for Massey; T. H. Burton moderated for Clark.
