W. G. Roberts (Rippey, Iowa) vs T. C. Kelley (Mormon)
November 18, 1909

(By S. I. S. Cawthon)

Bro. W. G. Roberts of Rippey, Iowa and Elder T. C. Kelley of Latter Day Saints. October 18-23.

Bro. Roberts exposed Kelley with ease. Kelley affirmed: "The church with which Dr. J. F. Love stands identified, known as the Church of Christ, is unapostolic in doctrine, practice, origin, and name, and is of human origin and has not right to stand." Mr. Kelly made no affirmation. He quibbled a short time over the Campbells and Brush Run. From these quibbles Bro. Roberts soon drove him and urged him to take the doctrine and prove it was not apostolic; also the practice, origin, and name. He made a feeble effort at the name and left that in defeat. On Wednesday evening, Bro. Roberts arraigned him on sixteen counts for his failure to answer.

On the second proposition: "Joseph Smith was an impostor and the Book of Mormon a fraud." Here Kelley showed his defeat. Bro. Roberts proved Smith was an impostor and the Book of Mormon a fraud from their own books and Smith's revelations so called. The audience compared Bro. Roberts to a big cat and Kelley to a mouse.

Bro. Roberts is an able debater - one who can annihilate Mormonism or any other kind of ism. He is nice and kind in his argument, but very strong, logical and forceful. He won an overwhelming victory for the truth. His sixteenth debate with them - familiar with their doctrine and their dodges. He tells them points they will use before they use it.

The Mormons showed scare from the start. Their house is two and a half miles from the depot and the Baptists kindly tendered the use of their house at McKenzie, Tennessee. But one of the Mormons said that the debate would be at their house or not at all, the object being to cut the crowd, and discourage Bro. Roberts from going there. Bro. Hix, Dr. J. F. Love from Pensacola, Florida were preaching brethren present. The sects were glad someone met the Latter Day Saints. They had no one who would. They came to the debate in great numbers.
