A. O. Calley vs J. E. Skinner (Missionary Baptist)
November 11, 1909
Farmington, Kentucky
(By F. O. Howell)
Four days, began October 26. This was one of the smoothest debates I have ever attended.
Skinner affirmed: (1) The scriptures teach that a sinner has salvation, or remission of sins, in actual possession before and without baptism - Calley denied.
Calley affirmed: (2) The scriptures teach the communion, or Lord's Supper, as taught and practiced by the disciples, or Church of Christ, today - Skinner denied.
Mr. Skinner is one of the ablest debaters the Missionary Baptists have since the death of their "great champion," J. N. Hall. Skinner takes many positions that are destructive to his doctrine in order to reply to all the arguments of his opponents. He is the fairest Baptist I ever saw in debate. Bro. Calley is decidedly the best debater and most logical speaker. Skinner's efforts during the last two days was the nearest nothing for debating I ever saw. Some of the most intelligent ones among his own brethren confessed their total defeat.
Gospel preachers attended: T. W. Phillips of Ft. Worth, Texas. Bro. Calley will meet Mr. Will Maxidon in debate about Christmas near Hyndsver, Tennessee where I have baptized more than 25 Methodists in the last fifteen months. Mr. Maxidon is a Methodist Circuit Rider of some repute. The truth has all to gain and nothing to lose when such men as Bro. Calley is called to expose error, contrasting it with truth.
