A. O. Calley vs C. H. Cayce
April 15, 1909
Maury City, Tennessee
(By J. S. Haskins)
March 30. Conducted upon a high plane. Well attended.
Propositions: Cayce affirmed numbers 1 - 2; Calley numbers 3 - 4. (1) The scriptures teach that all for whom Christ died will be eternally saved in heaven. (2) The scriptures teach that in conversion or regeneration, the Holy Spirit operates upon the sinner's heart direct, separate, and apart from the preached or written word. (3) The scriptures teach that baptism to a believing penitent is a condition of pardon from past sins. (4) The scriptures teach that a child of God may apostatize or fall away so as to be finally lost.
On the atonement, Calley pressed him to tell how many for whom Christ had died. He only said as many as would be saved in heaven. Hebrews 2:9 ruined him. On the Spirit question, Cayce was asked to give one case where the Spirit operated in the conviction and conversion of the sinner without the preached or written word. Calley showed every case of conversion where the Spirit operated through the gospel.
On baptism, Cayce appealed to prejudice. He named some dead people who died without baptism and expected to go to heaven. This was his rebuttal against Mark 16:16 and Acts 2:38. Relatives of the dead people resented Cayce. One man said. "It was impudent upon Cayce's part." Calley asked Cayce if he could tell where a man was going by his dying words. If so, what about Jesus on the cross. "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
On apostasy, Calley showed that a child of God stands by faith, and some had departed from the faith, and some had damnation because they had cast off their first faith. Cayce made only a faint reply.
Cayce is a nice man, and I think he made as able an effort as any man among them; but his efforts were a failure against the truth in the hands of Bro. Calley. Brethren, if you have to have a debate, you need not have any fears as to Bro. Calley's being able to defend the truth on any part of the ground.
