E. L. Whitaker (Memphis) for G. C. Brewer vs Allen Walker (Adventist) (Orlando, Florida)
June 12, 1930
Memphis, Tennessee
(By Miss Frances Mullins)
Debated at Memphis, Tennessee, April 13-22. Five nights at Adventist Tabernacle and five nights at Highland Heights Church of Christ.
Grew out of challenge by G. C. Brewer to the whole Adventist denomination. They refused to meet Brewer, but, to hide their cowardice, they challenged Bro. Whitaker who had never debated and had only two days to prepare.
Walker was forced into several embarrassing positions on the Sabbath. He said "new covenant" of Jeremiah 31:31-34 was the Ten Commandments; that the old covenant was recorded in Exodus 19. Bro. Whitaker showed him that uttered. After contrasting the law of Moses and the law of Christ, he asked Mr. Walker to say which law we are under, and he when asked which law we are discharged from, he pointed to his chart and said, "The Ten Commandments."
One night he ran out of anything to say and began to sing, "There Is a Fountain Filled With Blood." All his brethren and some of ours joined in. The Adventists were not pleased with Walker's defense.
R. E. Henson and F. O. Howell moderated for Whitaker. Mr. Wysing, Presidenet of the General Conference, Nashville, Tennessee moderated for Walker.
