W. T. Boaz vs Taylor (Missionary Baptist)
June 24, 1909

Hardin, Kentucky

Held at Baptist Church at Hardin, Kentucky on June 1.

Gospel preachers present were Brethren Haskins, Ethridge, Crouch, H. W. Jones, Newbern Jones, Roberson and Charley Taylor (the boy preacher of Hazel, Kentucky). Mr. Taylor affirmed for two days: "The Bible teaches that the penitent believer has salvation, or remission of sins, before baptism." Boaz contested every argument. Taylor said the K. J. V. Nor any other recognized translation correctly translated "eis". He said the Emphatic Diaglott only was correct. Boaz charged that it was not accepted by any scholar or college as a standard and challenged Taylor to deny it. Taylor remained as silent as the grave. Taylor misquoted J. W. McGarvey. On the second proposition: Bro Boaz affirmed the establishment of the church on Pentecost. Boaz made but few arguments but they were powerful.

Taylor is the ablest debater the Baptists have in W. Kentucky. Boaz met him easily at every point. He knows the Bible and is an able defender of the truth. "Bro. Boaz, in my judgment, has some points of superiority over any other debater I have ever heard. Among these, I mention his clearness in making a point, his earnestness in presentation, and his continuing to press his points and press his opponent. He never lets up until the matter stands out so clearly that even a tyro in knowledge and judgment cannot fail to see. Many opponents call him hard." That is based on their inability to meet his arguments. Of course it is hard to be run down and have no way to escape.

We think the debate will do much good. The people all seemed to enjoy it very much. The citizens showed the visitors much kindness and great hospitality. The disputants signed up for another debate later on the general church question.
