C. D. Crouch vs W. J. Watson (Missionary Baptist)
July 26, 1928
White House, Tennessee
(By J. M. Dennis)
Debate at White House, June 18-21.
There were two sessions each day of two hours. The speakers made four speeches each day; two in a.m. and two in p.m. The debate was scheduled for six days but owing to rainy weather, which served to keep people away, it was decided to close on fourth day. But on the fourth day the crowd was larger than it had been on any day. Brethren Allen, Srygley, Babs and others came from Nashville. All seemed delighted with Bro. Crouch's able efforts to establish the truthfulness of his proposition.
Mr. Watson is a pleasant old fellow, and no doubt a nice man, but he is weakest man in debate I have heard in 40 years. The weakness of his positions was evident. Watson did not pursue the course usually followed by Baptist debaters, but presented a line peculiar to itself and himself. Bro. Crouch was equal to the exposure. I wish to commend him to the brotherhood as a faithful gospel preacher and an able defender of the cause. A. J. Sloan moderated for Watson; J. M. Dennis moderated for Crouch.
