E. C. Creacy vs T. S. Payne (Holiness)
(By Victor M. Kelley)
Each man affirmed general church propositions for two nights. Elder Payne was rather reluctant to advance the doctrines and practices which distinguish his people from others and spent considerable time in discussing things upon which the disputants agreed. He repudiated some of the teachings found in their literature, as well as some things which his brethren practice in some places, including the doctrine of hereditary total depravity, the preaching of deathbed stories, and the use of the word "Reverend" to distinguish preachers.
Bro. Creacy proved himself to be master of the situation and made a splendid affirmation and defense of primitive Christianity. The church at Champaign and neighboring congregations were highly pleased with his work. Elder Payne paid him a great compliment: by saying he was the strongest and fairest opponent he had had in all of his thirteen debates.
Much good was accomplished by this debate. The debaters conducted themselves in such a way that no trace of ill will was left. A great number of persons heard the gospel who would not come to ordinary religious services. Several strangers made inquiry concerning the Church of Christ.
Brethren came from Danville, Matton, Bismarck, and St. Joseph in Illinois - Crawfordsville and Ladoga, Indiana. Preachers there: Grover Moss, George Shull, and a Bro. Morgan. A number of "Holiness" preachers were in attendance.
A. B. Reavis, Dresden, Tennessee moderated for Creacy; Elder Newton, Urbana, Illinois moderated for Elder Payne.
