Herbert E. Winkler vs Thomas Jayner (Presbyterian)
November 10, 1921
Glasgow, Kentucky
(By R. C. White)
Jayner aff. for two days: "An alien sinner may be saved in answer to his prayers before and without submitting to the ordinance of water baptism." Debated at Reid's Chapel 4 miles north of Glasgow, Ky. Audiences very large and well behaved.
Mr. Jayner in 3rd speech violated Hedges logic. He was promptly called to order and stopped it. Mr. Jayner really debated the "faith only" theory all the way through. Bro. Winkler fully met his arguments and the brethren were satisfied. Bro. Winkler was at some inconvenience as his house burned the week before and destroyed his books and notes.
The brethren at Canmer and Green's Chapel asked for th debate to be repeated at each place. This was agreed to be repeated upon and Nov. was the time set for Green's Chapel.
Mr. Jayner and his moderator challenged us to debate next summer (1922) on 4 propositions, but bro. Winkler thought not enough importance to the one pertaining to forgiveness complete prior to the cross. They may come to agreement later. This grew out of the statement that all sins before the death of Christ were not absolutely forgiven, but only tolled forward.
Mr. Jayner's position on "bind" (Matt. 16:19) was amusing and ridiculous when bro. Winkler made it clear to be seen from I Cor. 7:39 that it does not mean stop, but ratified, required, in these passages. Mr. Jayner used John as great proof, but bro. Winkler made it clear that Christ's will as applied to us is since his death, and used Heb. 9:15- 17 to great advantage. This is a very important scripture. One great stronghold of Mr. Jayner was that Mk. 16:16 is spurious. Winkler gave good authority on its genuineness, and with a diagram on the board made a forceful argument on obedience.
Brethren present: E. G. Creacy, F. H. Woodward, W. D. Emberton, Tolly Phemister, J. E. Speakman, W. T. Dunagan and W. J. Dennis. Bro. Dennis began a meeting the day of he debate closing on Oct. 19. R. C. White moderated for Winkler.
