John R. Williams vs W. H. "Wild Bill" Evans (Missionary Baptist)
May 3, 1906
Letters from John R. Williams to W. H. Evans - who refused to debate
W. H. Evans was bragging at Bethel, Tenn. that no one will debate him. He was here in 1894 and 1895. In 1895 propositions were signed but he would not debate.
Letter #1 - Bro. Williams wrote Evans in Martin, Tenn. - Sept. 20. 1895. "I have been informed that you asked my name very freely in your meetings at Wilsonville and Obion making untrue assertion and misrepresented the teachings of my brethren. I'll meet you in debate at Wilsonville, Troy, or Obion. Do you belong to the Methodist Conference at this time? Will they endorse you? Will you debate?
Letter 2 - Sept. 30, 1895. "I wrote you 10 day ago asking for a chance to defend myself and my brethren. Are you going to answer my letters? I can get 100 good men to in Obion Co. Who heard you misrepresent me." No answer to this letter.
Letter #3 - Oct. 8, 1895. "Dear sir: If you do not intend to answer my letters, will you be so kind as to return to me? I shall expect you tp return my letters."
He never returned my letters - never wrote me one word. His last tirade of abuse here calls for the publication of these letters, that the people may know that "Wild Bill" Evans will not meet anyone in public discussion. He will give not one a chance to be heard face to face in defense of his gross misrepresentations of the teachings of others. The reader of the GA can preserve these copies of my letters to him and show them to the people where he goes, and ask him if he ever returned my letters.
