William Whitaker vs Mr. Cothram (Holiness)
July 27, 1950
Jacksonville, Florida

(By E. L. Flannery)

On July 16 Cothram affirmed: "Resolved , that the baptism of the H.S. is for us today just like it as for the apostles." Bro. Whitaker did an excellent job in tearing apart the arguments of the affirmative and setting forth the truth on the subject.

At the close of the discussion, one lady, formerly a "holiness," came forward to obey the gospel. A colored preachers stood up and said he had come that afternoon with the intention of challenging bro. Whitaker on his teaching concerning baptism, but after having heard the debate, he did not desire to do so, now having a clearer understanding. He also said, "I never noticed that there was a period at the end of Mark 16:16." Another colored sectarian preacher said he saw no sense to such a debate; that both speakers had the same heavenly Father. He said, "We folks down south clean a hog by dipping him in hot water and wrapping burlap sacks around him to steam him. Up north they use straw. We both get them clean, so why argue with the other fellow?" To this bro. Whitaker tersely replied: "We're not cleaning hogs, but cleaning souls. God left hod cleaning to human opinion, but salvation from sin must be done in God's way, by the gospel." A perfect answer.
