T. B. Thompson vs G. R. Tyler (Missionary Baptist)
March 3, 1912
Greenway, Arkansas

(By W. L. Reeves)

At Greenway, Ark., Feb. 15-16.

Mr. Tyler affirmed the church was established during the life of Christ. He defined the church as a body of the baptized believers. He then proceeded to find such a body before the death of Christ, His first position was that Isa. 2:2,3 was fulfilled in Mark.3:13, but before the closed his first speech he found a body of baptized believers in the days of John the Baptist. He then said , the kingdom began with the gospel, but the gospel began with John; so the kingdom began with John. He then shifted to Caesarea Philippi (Mt. 16:13-19). He never waned till would tell what this body of baptized believers really believed. To tell would ruin any Baptist in debate when he would have to face Acts 19:3-5.

Bro. Thompson pressed him with the following objections: 1) He had the wrong place (Zech. 1:16); 2) There was an imperfect gospel (Heb. 9:22); 3) The apostles had no power to confirm their word (Acts 1:8; Heb. :1-4); 4) It had no priests (Heb. 8:4; 7:12); 5) It had no atonement (Rom. 1:4); 6) It had no testament in force (Heb. 9:15-10); 7) It had not king on a throne (Ps. 11:4; Acts 2:30,31). These arguments were never answered. Bro. Thompson used charts showing the church was not established before Pentecost

I consider bro. Thompson a model of behavior. His delivery is good and his personal appearance in the pulpit is fine. He is quick of perception, pointed in argument, and sticks top the subject. Leaving out all foolishness and slang. There is a bright future for him if he will continue to be humble as he now seems.
