O. P. Swope vs A. K. Mitzel (Pentecostal)
June 3, 1934
Fort Henry, Tennessee
(By W. Claytus Anderson)
It was my (W. Claytus Anderson) pleasure to moderate for O.P. Swope near Fort Henry, Tenn. when he met A.K. Mitzel (Pentecostal).
The debate was short. They had agreed to discuss the general church questions for 4 days, but by noon the first day bro. Swope pressed Mitzel with the truth so hard that he quit. His excuse was that bro. Swope should have looked at the audience instead of looking at him and pointing his finger in his face.
Mr. Mitzel claimed to be full of the Holy Ghost. But just before dismissal I arose and related the fact that Stephen (Acts 7) was full of the Holy Ghost; that he was cast out of the city and stoned til dead. I said: "Stephen had the Holy Ghost and stay with his opponents til they killed him, and I know that bro. Swope has not treated you like they treated him."
Bro. Swope had been a Methodist preacher til George R. Long taught him the truth and baptized him. Brethren, call bro. Swope for meetings. Let us give him work in the Lord's vineyard. He is to meet his father in debate some time this summer. His father is W. C. Swope, the man with whom John Fairs Nichols is debating in Charleston, Mo. at this very time.
