J. A. Sisco vs W. R. Rushton (Primitive Baptist)
August 31, 1911
Grassy Branch, Tennessee
(By Will. J. Cullum)
On Aug.21 at Grassy Branch, eight miles from Waverly, Tenn. J.A. Sisco met Mr. W.R. Rushton, of the Primitive Baptist Church, in a four-days debate. Mr. Rushton affirmed that the church of which he is a member is scriptural in origin, doctrine and practice and none other is. Bro. Sisco affirmed also on days three and four.
Bro. Sisco is 22 years younger than Mr. Rushton, yet he proved himself to be master of the situation in his strong and forceful presentation of the truth. A number of questions were propounded by him that were left unnoticed by Mr. Rushton. The latter clearly showed his defeat and even failed to fill out his time in the last speech. He spoke for only a few minutes and, after telling of a dream that he once had when called to preach, asked that a song be sung and the debate came to a close. Mr. Rushton said that he would never challenge anyone else for a debate, and asked to be allowed to withdraw the challenge made by him 14 months ago and accepted by the writer (Will. J. Cullum). This was granted him, and I verily believe that he has had his last discussion with our brethren.
