W. C. Phillips vs W. M. Pettigrew (Sanctified)
December 3, 1925
Rossville, Georgia
(By R. E. L. Taylor)
Short debate Nov.15 (afternoon and night) at Rossville,Ga.
The subjects: 1) The scriptures teach that the Christian should and can live without committing sin in his life." 2) The scriptures teach that the penitent believer is saved, or receives forgiveness of sins, in and only in the act of water baptism. Pettigrew aff. no. 1 and Phillips aff. no. 2.
Mr. Pettigrew is the man that bro. Flavil Hall had a debate with a few weeks back, and bro. Phillips was bro. Hall's moderator. Mr. Pettigrew gave out a challenge and bro. Phillips accepted it. But bro. Phillips was too strong for him and the debate never took place. Mr. Pettigrew's first speech was fair, but never again did he reach that peak. He weakened in every speech. Bro. Phillips is one of our strongest brethren.
Bro. Phillips asked Mr. Pettigrew 16 pertinent questions, but he noticed none of them. Bro. Phillips also presented some syllogisms in a discussion of he latter subject, but Pettigrew failed to notice these also. Pettigrew's people failed to attend the last round at night, even his moderator hid out. Without a question of doubt, the discussion was a victory for the truth. Mr. Pettigrew seems to be a very fair man. I was led to believe that he was almost persuaded to obey the gospel. Large crowds came to all sessions.
