Dr. J. W. Perkins vs Dr. N. S. Tanner (Pentecostal)
March 24, 1909
Long Beach, California

(By Unknown)

A debate on miracles ceased suddenly at Long Beech, Calif.

The religious discussion between Dr. Perkins and Dr. Tanner came to an abrupt conclusion by Dr. Tanner refusing to discuss his side of the subject any loner.

The debate was to have lasted three sessions of two hours each; but Dr. Tanner refused to debate after the first two hours. He had earlier challenged any man to debate hi. The newspapers said he would furnish the hall and "pay all necessary expenses." But he declined to furnish a hall for more than one session. The Christians, represented by bro. Perkins, agreed to furnish their hall. Dr. Tanner refused to debate and said, "Dr. Perkins had something up his sleeve."

The large crowd that assembled was not disappointed because bro. Perkins discussed at length the purpose of the miracles of the Bible. He gave the following reasons: 1) To prove that Jesus was the Christ (Jn. 20:30-31). 2) Those done by the apostles and other at that time confirmed the word (Mk. 16:20); that when the perfect will of God was revealed, all miracles were done away (I Cor. 13:8-10); that today we "walk by faith and not by sight" (II Cor. 5:7); and that faith comes by hearing the word of God (Rom. 10:17).
