Gus Nichols vs Glenn V. Tingley (Baptist)
June 19, 1941
Flat Creek, Alabama
(By J. G. Pounds)
This debate aroused great interest at Flat Creel, Ala. Mr. Tingley affirmed the direct operation of the H.S. two nights; bro. Nichols affirmed water baptism for remission of sins for two nights. Then Tingley affirmed salvation by faith alone. I have attended many debates, but have never heard the truth better defended and error better defeated. Bro. Nichols manifested the spirit of great conviction, hatred for error, and love for the truth and the souls of men. Many preachers attended.
Mr. Tingley tried to discard Mark 16:16 and Acts 2:28 by bringing up cases where "great men" this side of N.T. times died without baptism. Bro. Nichols showed that to fail to comply with God's commands did not make them of none effect, and that every commandment could be discarded the same way.
While debating the H. S. question , Mr. Tingley had Cornelius a bad sinner and the Holy Spirit falling upon him to convert him; but when he came to discuss baptism, Cornelius was a saved man before baptism and before the H. S. fell on him.
