John T. Hinds vs R. H. Pigue (Methodist)
August 20, 1908
Rocky Comfort, Missouri
(By John T. Hinds)
This debate began July 6 and ran 6 days at Rocky Comfort, Mo.
The general church questions were discussed. R. H. Pigue led the first 3 days. I shall not attempt any general report of the debate.
Most Gospel Advocate readers have heard of Mr. Pigue as he has debated Srygley, Dunn, Freed, Warlick and others. My impression, formed from the reports of these debates and some private correspondence, was that he is a very unfair and disagreeable opponent. My experience confirmed this impression. He is the most deliberately unfair debater I have ever seen. I consider any Methodist congregation disgraced that is represented by such a man. Any man who will indorse him is to be pitied, provided he is honest.
Perhaps someone will ask: "Why do you meet such a man?" Sometimes it is necessary. It is often necessary to do an unpleasant job. There are a few Meth. congregations which will get carried away with his abuse and littleness and look upon him as a perfect mongol. They will insist on him representing them. So you have to meet him, or have the cause of truth slandered and no defense offered. Then, if properly handled, all sensible people will be disgusted with his manner, and this goes to the credit of the truth. In argument he is not strong; in abuse and misrepresentation he is ahead of the class. So, when necessary, meet Pigue and stand ready for the job when the situation demands.
