N. B. Hardeman vs Ira M. Boswell (Christian Church)
Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tennessee
June 14, 1923

(By F. B. Srygley - also moderated for Hardeman)

This was a representative debate. John B. Camden carried the idea of a debate before the Christian church brethren at Avaca and was approved by the entire convention. The idea was to debate in Nashville and then carry debate over the state. The commission chose Ira M. Boswell of Georgetown, Ky and we selected N. B. H. It represented the entire church convention and not the Christian church in Nashville only.

Boswell weakened his weak position by saying you can sing with or without the organ. I have heard many debates, but this one was begun, carried on, and completed nearer to my notion than any I ever heard. I shall always be glad of the part I had in bringing it about and I had the pleasure of hearing every word of it. Boswell showed good spirit but was hard pressed. I have friends on that side that should see the weakness of their contention. For sake of unity and peace they should return to their original doctrine.

Christian church people said they wanted the debate published - now they take no interest in the publication.
